Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), together with Science Education Institute
(SEI), held last September 28, 2004, the formal launching of their project entitled "Pilot
Testing of a Low-Cost, Low-Maintenance Computing System for Philippine Schools". This is the
second phase of the project which involves secondary-level schools as project beneficiaries.
The launching ceremonies was held in San Bartolome High School, in Novaliches, Quezon City. The
joint project aims to introduce the Linux Thin Client set-up to identified public schools as part
of SEI's PC Program donation. This is in response to the needs of public schools for computers that
involves lower cost of ownership and resource maximization.
The solution focused on running thin client computers in a GNU/Linux environment which uses the Linux
platform for deploying diskless workstations that boot from a network server. The set-up for the school
included 15 clients connected to a server, a printer and pre-installed Linux OS and educational
applications together with Science and Math Educational Software provided by SEI.
