Q: I see a gray screen with an X cursor. What's wrong?

A1: This indicates that the Xserver is running but it hasn't been able to make
contact with the display manager.

Q: Why?

A1: Display Manager may not be running
-check if xdmcp is running
(netstat -ap | grep xdmcp)
- check if you have the correct entry in lts.conf
(XDM_SERVER=192.168.0.254)

A2: Display Manager may be configured to ignore remote requests
XDM
(/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config) #DisplayManager.requestPort=0
(/etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess) * #any host can get a login window

KDM
kdmrc
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true

GDM
gdm.conf
[xdmcp]
Enable = true

- Display Manager is unable to map IP Addresses to hostnames,
check entries in /etc/hosts

Q: How to check if the dhcpd (or other services) of the server is active (RedHat)?

A: Login as root then type “/etc/init.d/dhcpd status”
