Bayanihan Linux Thin Client Manager software is the main deliverable of “Commercialization of Bayanihan Linux Terminal Server Installer: An Open Source Thin Client Implementation Project”, of Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI). The project is currently being funded by Technological Innovation Commercialization Program (TECHNICOM) of Department of Science and Technology (DOST). It is a cost effective, Open Source thin client solution with server-based management features for simpler installation/configuration and administration, to meet the true needs of today’s growing thin client and server-based computing environments.

It is built on Linux Terminal Server Project Technology (LTSP). A thin client system consists of multiple diskless (no hard drives, CD-ROM, and floppy drives) client computers that are connected to a central server. For many organizations, thin client computing system and the use of Open Source software can provide more cost-effective network computing than traditional PC workstation/server architectures that utilize commercial proprietary software, data format, and communication protocols. It will provide organizations with significant benefits such as centralized system administration, central management of virus protection, reduced exposure to theft, increased data protection, reduction in end-user support, control over user flexibility, and finally, improved performance. Most importantly, thin client systems reduce total cost of ownership (TCO), by slashing system administration costs and reducing downtime. It also has limited client hardware requirements including lower cost CPU, no floppy drives, no CD-ROM drives, no hard drives, and less memory. The benefits provided by the product or project as a whole, are a particularly good match to the needs of the following target markets: government (at all levels), academe (schools, universities, and colleges), small and medium enterprises (SMEs), not-for-profits (NFPs)/non-governmental organizations (NGOs), libraries, and own equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

The project was established with a vision to catalyze the use of Open Source client-server computing in public and private organizations. Also, to maximize computing resources by converting old or legacy computers into diskless client computers, enabling organizations to pursue computerization efforts with minimal expenses. It is a true Filipino initiative to information liberalization.
